About the work
Imagine a balloon, not yet fully inflated. The balloon is painted with a thick layer of material. After it is dry, more air is added and the ballon expands, cracking and fracturing the material- moving it outwards, but not exploding it. The air is let out and the fractured pieces contract and re-connect except now there are definite lines and scars that can never be made perfect again. This expansion defines the aesthetic of the new work in Mejannes-Le-Clap, France, by Brian Lawrence.
One definition of Yod is the hebrew word for the hand of God, though it has many related subtle meanings. In astronomy and astrology terms a Yod is a uneven triangular formation made between 3 planets and is also known as "a finger of God". This highly specialized shape gives rise to tension, creative searching for solution and equalization, and a journey of dealing with past karma of ancestors and others that is not directly related to one's own past. An expansion of these Fingers of God brings the tension to a more harmonious place of the equilateral triangle where each of the 3 points make 120 degrees, adding up to 360 - a full circle of equal degrees: The flow of each leg/point of the equilateral triangle is now in harmony with the others and the whole. The movement toward a new balance can seemingly create an explosive change in form, which is not always welcomed to the static and stationary. Triangles are the change, action and vehicle for movement toward a balanced circular sphere. The Finger of God or Yod will point the way toward this balance.
